AdWords question

This is going to sound pretty noobish, but I'm new to AdWords...

It seems as if every AdWords user has a product that they are trying to sell to visitors. Do you need to have a product to use AdWords? What if I'm just trying to drive traffic to a non-commercial site - can adwords be used for this?

Good to know. The site I'd want to do this for is in a very small niche and would probably be looking at .01 to .03 cent keywords, I'm almost certain. I don't mind spending a couple bucks/day to get the site off the ground.

I have done it for a few sites. $1/day. However, you have to choose carefully your keywords. Just because it is a niche doesn't mean it will be cheap.
