Looks like the giant marketing research firm "Forester Research" is predicting a 60% increase in search marketing in the next 2 years.
This substantial increase will bring not only large corporations to search marketing mix but smaller companies and businesses as well...
They do predict a decline in 2007 from what they call "consumer distrust in paid listings"...
This is a snippet from a statement made by Forrester:
"But while search spending will more than triple, its share in online advertising will decline by 2007, as consumer mistrust of paid listings takes effect, rich media ads gain prominence, and prices of keywords rise."

The best internet ads have historically been the ones that are unobtrusive and clearly marked as ads, such as the google text ads. Person choice is a very important psychological factor here --- nobody is going to want to purchase a product that he feels is imposed upon him. I, for example, will never buy an X10 camera. That company started the pop-under crazy of yesteryear.

The imfamous x-10 camera....
Can you believe I had one... Sold it on ebay to get my money back, but who could forget that agressive marketing campaign....
As a matter of fact, they are referred to often as an example....

I hardly think that the value of the search business will decrease in 2007. There are so few businesses active at this time and when local search becomes mature there will be huge new markets to grow in.
Also, Forrester are talking about paid listings through search marketing and not SEO in the strict form.

You have to also take into account the advancement of search engine algorithms which might make them less receptive to SEO.

Sure that is a possible scenario, but not very likely in my opinion.
Search techies can make it harder to get a good ranking and find more parameters to give penalties, but that will just increase the effect of good SEO work and the value of the services they deliver.
