It feels like it was only a matter of time until that happened.... I agree that submission status basically took over the entire project of resource-zone and why it was began in the first place...
On a more important note though, I have noticed that on submission inquiries, as stated in the above link about privacy and not being able to comment about everything that goes on, I can report in my own personal experience that there has been instances where editors would respond to a submission status and not report the whole truth...
In other words, there has been times where a submission has been flat out denied and the submission status would come back as:
"Your submission has been recieved and is awaiting review by the catagory editor, there is no reason to resubmit at this time".
Now in all reality, the editor note would really say something like:
"deleted, spam affiliate site only lists affiliates" deleted from unrevewed 05/25/04
So, now the requesting party THINKS their site is awaiting review when really, it's definetly not getting in DMOZ....
With factors like this, the entire project gets effected in a negitive way....
Discontinuing status checks will elleviate them from this delema.

DMOZ started heading downhill as soon as link popularity and Google came into the picture....
