Exchange Question

I have been trying to configure exchange. I have a domain called domainname.local. Now in exchange when I set up users it sets them up with username@domainname.local. Do I have to rename my AD to .com to get email addresses that end in .com. I changed the MX records in Godaddy (my registrar) to my server. Now I am trying to test everything.

I apologize as I am totally new to this and have to do some reading. I am being lazy and looking for a quick answer so that I can get it working while I study up on it.
