the 'Association of Search Engine Spammers' was not the intial intent. In fact we attempted to start an Assocation of Search Engine Professionals. What wound up happening is all the largest SEO firms could not agree on exactly what would be considered the proper Guidelines.
Yooter InterActive was the founding member and the sole sponser of it. Our intent was to just make our Guidelines a simple link to Google, Yahoo and MSN's guidelines.
However not many expressed intrest in that. In fact the opposition was considerable for adopting that as the Search Engine Professional's guidelines.
So we created the Parody site as a rebuttal to to the opposition. In fact, the parody site now has several thousand visitors a day to it.. mostly marketing professionals.
In regards to SEMPO .. the problem with SEMPO is that it is really geared towards SEM... SEO is just a sideline of the assocation, hence the need for a professional Assocation that is geared towards the SEO aspect of it...
As of yet there is no real vaild assocation for SEO ..

Welcome Founder, nice to have you shed some light on that....
I have considered in the recent past beginning the
"Search Engine Optimization Webmasters Association"
I even have the domain name:
www.seowa.com (http://www.seowa.com/)
But never went ahead with it.... It's alot of work, but I may still consider it in the very near future....

The parody site is pretty much entrenched now... ClickZ and a few media outlets have been calling us all weekend about it.. so there will be a few stories on this this week..
I think the funnist aspect of the whole thing is we got a DMOZ listing in about 15 min after site launch... and we didn't even submit it :)
Good Luck with it.. you are going to run into some of these problems:
1) How do you police it?
2) What to do when people are caught doing things that stand against the assocation?
3) Finding members that would agree to strict guidelines... and STICK to the guidelines.
The reason I know is because Yooter InterActive tried.. we had all the larger firms in discussion about it.. they agreed in principle.. but when it came down to the nitty gritty... that is when there was problems..
However you do have our support if the guidelines are links to Google, Yahoo and MSN's guidelines.

This would be quiet a challenge. You would have many brilliant people fighting for political positioning. Then if you introduce awards - look out...lol
It could turn into another Dmoz of drudgery. On the other hand...if you could tame the SEO brotherhood it could become quit interesting to what the SE environment would consider and allow to be controlled.

This is the hardest part of all...
the success would all depend on these factors..and more to how to constantly monitor the adherence to the formulated policies..
Clasione I'd the first member if you ever go ahead with your plan for www.seowa.com (http://www.seowa.com)
Best of luck...u need lotta of it i'm sure..:lie:
