This is becoming a general statement of frustration amongst SEO professionals.

The rage one might feel is generated by frustration in the DMOZ system. Most complain of a long Waite, others complain it is secured by only an elite few, and others are upset at the weight Google gives to the directory listings. I personally have sites that are sitting and waiting for review, some 17 months. But rather than flip out, I just see DMOZ as a link.

What’s your thought on DMOZ of 2005?

I have had my luck with DMOZ, so I havent had the real frustration... A few things here and there I could not get in, but for the most part I have never had too much trouble with them - but you are not alone.....

Many many people wait very long to get a listing...

On another note, my directory recently got raped by spammers, so rather than become another DMOZ controled by editors I have disable the editor feature until I can assess the situation from a fresh mindset...

PM'ing you....

Doug it is frustrating, i got in dmoz years ago and then i lost it!! in a re-shuffle
Some people still own directorys with archives and the aftermath helps, but i wish i could get back in there again and keep up with the fresh stuff, does anybody know what dmoz are expanding in next or opening up a new category in ?

Don't bother with DMOZ. Yeh, it's a trusted site, but life's to short for me waiting for DMOZ to list my site (am I a bitter person?)

spondishy, I think you hit the nail on the head mate. I would suggest anyone to apply to DMOZ but don't expect too much from it. If you get in, it's great; otherwise it is not the end of the world.

I might be able to help if you're trying to get into the Berkshire Property section :)

Ha ha... Thanks, but I think my site content isn't that relevant to Berkshire (I assume you mean UK county?)

I Hate DMOZ
...snip...
The rage one might feel is generated by frustration in the DMOZ system. It might be just that I have my "parent hat" on today (school holidays argh) but that's pretty strong language to describe a directory, don't you think?

DMOZ is like that mean great uncle who you stay away from as much as you can, but all of a sudden he kicks you down a nice gift and then he is cool ... for a minute or 2 ;)

Humm, life might be short, but do we really want to waste is languishing at the bottom of Google's SERPS because it's placed sooo much weight on a DMOZ listing?

It's a good argument to buy / register a pre-listed pre-existing domain.

Don't get mad at DMOZ, it's just a victim of it's own success.

Is it a case of waiting to see if things eventually happen (ie. get listed) or is there a way of checking to see the progress??? Especially now the forum has been closed..

Hi Mike

Welcome to the forum! There's no way of checking on the progress and it's not as if it's on a conveyor belt working it's way around a factory anyway. Editors pick the sites they edit using any number of tools and sometimes your submission might look hard so it gets left, or it might look challenging so it gets picked early, or it looks easy so it gets picked, or it's in an editors "pet" category so it gets picked.

The best thing to do is just to forget it, search the directory occassionally (because you may not end up in the category you submitted to) and get on with working yor way through lists like this one: http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/free-web-directories.html

by the time you get to the end DMOZ will be the last thing on your mind ;)

Good points everyone.

I have an update...My site Branson Critic has recieved over 65,000 unique visitors, and over a million hits in the last 10 months.

Look at these http://bransoncritic.org/webstats/

Yet it is over a year and is still not in Dmoz:jiggy:

No other site like in all of Branson. What a directory

I guess people in your area just aren't interested in being volunteers. DMOZ can't be held responsible for that!

On the other hand, congrats for having such a successful site! :goodvibes

I've given up with DMOZ. Its a too easilly corrupted system. Editors go MIA for months, even years, whether it be the old "my site is in, SEE YA" syndrome or just lack of interest.

Best way to deal with DMOZ, now, I think, is just submit once and forget about it. If you get in, fantastic, if not, who cares.

I have submitted my so many sites in Dmoz at most relevant category but Dmoz not take my any site. Whereas mostly of them comes at top position at search phrase (related to the site).
So gyes not to be frosted if you site not indexed at Dmoz. Without indexing at Dmoz you can got high placement at search engines.

I love dmoz, when editors listed one of my sites with that links I get out of Sandbox when I appear in Google Directory.

A lot of spam sites are sending to DMOZ every day, and all webmaster says: My site is the best of Blue Widgets in the world, three pages with 100 times the word Blue Widget and the photo of a dog with alt="The best blue widget"... When People send a spam site, DMOZ editors waste time and Editors need more time to get listed good ones.

ON the other hand other my main site isn´t listed in DMOZ, but it´s not very much important, You can reach good rankings without DMOZ. (Yahoo Directory, Business.com, Microsoft)

Good luck
